Elaine Penhaul: From Horses to Home Staging
Elaine Penhaul, the visionary founder of Lemon and Lime Interiors, shares her insights on life, business, and everything in between.
In this exclusive Q&A, we delve into the mind of Elaine Penhaul, the driving force behind Lemon and Lime Interiors. From her childhood aspirations to her vision for the future, Elaine offers a candid glimpse into her life and the philosophy that guides her success.
Q: When you were a child, what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?
A: I always envisioned a life surrounded by horses, dreaming of becoming a riding instructor. Unfortunately, allergies dashed those dreams. Instead, I embarked on a “portfolio career,” a concept unfamiliar to my generation. Our mothers expected us to prioritise motherhood, viewing careers as a secondary pursuit.
Q: How would your close friends describe you?
A: Driven, ambitious, and competitive. They’d also mention my tendency to disappear into work, sometimes to the point of requiring intervention! While I can be quite focused, I genuinely enjoy people and value strong relationships.
Q: What tends to frustrate or annoy you the most?
A: I can’t stand inefficiency. I believe in taking action and finding solutions. If you have the information, don’t waste time asking for it—take initiative!
Q: Who or what do you find most motivating or inspiring?
A: I’m particularly inspired by women who effortlessly balance career and family with grace and focus. Recently, I met one such woman at a House of Lords event, and her poise and determination left a lasting impression.
Q: How would you describe an ideal day for you?
A: An ideal day would begin with outdoor activity, perhaps a hike or a sailing trip. I find that spending time in nature clears my mind and allows me to think more creatively. The rest of the day would be spent enjoying quality time with family and friends, perhaps with a glass of red wine and a cosy fire.
Q: What do you enjoy spending your money on?
A: I’m not a frivolous spender. Growing up, I learned to appreciate the value of money and avoid unnecessary expenses. I prioritise experiences and investments in my family and business.
Q: What is your favourite place to visit for a holiday?
A: Sailing is my escape. The West Coast of Scotland offers breath-taking scenery and challenging sailing conditions, making it my favourite destination. The Ionian Islands in Greece, where I once lived, also hold a special place in my heart.
Q: What book has had the most impact on you?
A: While I enjoy reading fiction, “The Healthy Compulsive” by Gary Trosclair resonated deeply with me. It provided valuable insights into my personality and helped me understand myself and my family better.
Q: What film do you enjoy the most?
A: “Top Gun Maverick” is a guilty pleasure. I loved the original, and the sequel surpassed expectations.
Q: What would be your first action if you were appointed prime minister?
A: I would prioritise bringing in experienced business leaders to serve in government. I believe that real-world experience is crucial for effective decision-making in politics.
Q: What is the best advice you have ever received, and what’s the worst?
A: The best advice I’ve received is to seek diverse perspectives before making important decisions. The worst advice, unfortunately, came during my divorce and involved misguided legal and financial counsel.
Q: How do you envision your life five years from now?
A: I envision a more relaxed lifestyle, perhaps semi-retired, with more time for travel and family. I would continue to contribute to the business while enjoying a more balanced approach to work and personal life.
Q: What moment or experience first sparked your interest in your industry?
A: My interest in home staging evolved organically. I’ve always enjoyed interior design and problem-solving, and these skills naturally translated into helping clients prepare their homes for sale.
Q: How do you see artificial intelligence’s role in shaping our world’s future?
A: AI has the potential to revolutionise many aspects of our lives. While there are concerns, I believe that ultimately, AI will enhance our capabilities and improve our quality of life.
Q: What’s your mission as the leader of Lemon and Lime Interiors?
A: My mission is to make home staging an integral part of the home selling process. I want to empower homeowners to achieve the best possible outcome by presenting their homes in the most appealing way. I also aim to support women in business and create opportunities for their success.
