Many of us face the challenge of creating a comfortable and functional living space in a limited area. It can be a daunting task to make the most out of a small living room, but with a little creativity and smart design choices, you can transform your space into a cosy and inviting area that perfectly suits your needs. We’ve shared our practical and stylish tips to help you maximise the potential of your living room.
How can I decorate my small living room?
Large mirrors are an obvious way to use wall hangings to open-up a room. Go large, and angle mirrors towards the garden which will bring in even more light and will give the added perception of depth to the room. Glass coffee tables are also a great option for reflecting light and continuing the flow of the room.
A large rug is very effective in a small room. Not only does it create comfort underfoot and warmth in the room, but it helps to maximise the space. Rugs are great for adding in colour and personality while also being practical.
Don’t be afraid of artwork, just consider where it is being positioned. Choose to hang artwork on the largest wall space to give a sense of openness. Contrary to popular perception, bigger canvases will make the space feel bigger, not smaller.
What colour furniture goes in a small living room?
The rules that apply to physical mess, also apply to visual mess. You don’t want to clutter your room with lots of colours and tones. Keep your walls white, even if it may seem boring, it is the easiest way of adding light and will make a room feel more spacious.
With bigger pieces of furniture, neutral tones are preferred. We suggest using textured material to help layer the space and add warmth, instead of shrinking the space further with colour. Bring the excitement into the room with pops of colour in cushions and artwork.
How do you maximise space in small living rooms?
I often recommend swapping closed cupboards for open shelves in small spaces, you can make the room feel less closed in and display your best-looking books at the same time. If you have more than one shelf, you can use mirrored glass in between for more light and create some interesting reflections.
Light and sound can also have a big impact on the perceived size and space of a room, with natural light being essential to brightening and enlarging your home. Use a compass app on your phone to find out exactly how the light moves around your living room and orientate your furniture accordingly – helping to maximise the useful light in your living space and keep you energised throughout the day.
Is a sectional good for a small living room?
When it comes to sectionals, finding the right fit is essential. They can be configured to suit the shape and space of your room, this versatility allows your furnishing to be fully customisable. However, they do generally take up more space than an average two or three-seater sofa.
Using armchairs instead of a sofa can be a great option to give more flexibility in where the seating is positioned, and these can be easily moved around to change the look and feel of the room.
With the right approach, you can turn your living room into a comfortable and inviting area. We hope you find these tips useful. Give our team a call to discuss how we can help you maxmise the space in your living room. 01332 987740
