Home staging and interior design are related but distinct concepts. Both concepts start with the idea of making a home look better. However, the purpose for which they are implemented is very different.

The purpose of home staging is primarily as a property marketing tool. It involves preparing a home for sale by intentionally making it more appealing to potential buyers, in particular the intended target buyer. This may involve rearranging furniture, decluttering, and making minor repairs or updates to improve the overall appearance of the home. It may acknowledge current design and colour trends that make the home especially attractive to a young professional buyer for instance, or the flow of rooms may be adjusted to appeal to a family audience. A professional home stager will work with the home owner and their chosen estate agent to identify the target market for an individual home and ensure that any alterations, furnishings or décor that is recommended, is deliberately trying to attract as many of these potential buyers as possible.

The goal of home staging is to guarantee that the professional photos taken as part of the service will pop out on the property portals so that potential buyers don’t scroll past, but they contact the agent to book a viewing. Attracting more viewers will, in turn, help the home sell more quickly and for a higher price.

Home staging is usually done with a very short turnaround time because the important thing is to get the home on the market and sold quickly for a high offer. The home seller’s budget will be directed by a professional stager at achieving the best sale, they are not advising spending money that isn’t going to attract more potential buyers. The cost of home staging should be considered a short term investment to get the highest possible price for a home.

Interior design, on the other hand, involves creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing space for someone to live in. This may involve choosing furniture, paint colours, and other decorative elements to achieve a particular look or style. Interior designers typically work with clients to create a space that meets their needs and reflects their personal taste and style. It is only intended to be as appealing as possible to the home owner. It may or may not be appealing to a wider audience, it doesn’t matter. If a home owner commissions an interior designer they are usually intending to stay in their home for a long time once the design is completed.

Completing an interior design project can take a long time. It isn’t always quick to source the perfect piece of furniture or artwork for a client and designers will expect to be working with a client for several months to achieve the results according to their brief. Interior design can be expensive but the client will be living with the outcome for many years.

In summary, home staging is focused on preparing a home for sale, while interior design is focused on creating a functional and attractive space for someone to live in.
