This month, we chat with Thomas Blake, Associate Partner at Fisher German LLP. Thomas is a qualified member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) and specialises in selling rural, residential and development properties.
We asked him 8 questions to obtain further insight into the person who is passionate about property.
1. Can you tell us about your business and what sets it apart from others in the industry?
We are a National Partnership, with 30 offices strategically located to provide our clients a comprehensive property consultancy offering. From Agency to Infrastructure sectors, we are well placed, with experts in all departments, all with a core focus on offering the best possible advice and service.
Unlike other ‘National’ competitors, we are not franchised, and all our offices and services work together to connect our established contacts, who respect our professional and transparent approach.
2. Have you ever noticed anything particularly memorable or impressive while house hunting or attending open houses?
After over 20 years in the industry, there have been many situations that would make for a good book, and I often attend challenging and complex properties and have almost become immune to what others may think is impressive/surprising. However, recently, attended a charming cottage in heavy rain, which adjoined a brook which was lapping at the back door. My first question was whether they have had any flooding issues, and this was robustly refuted. I remained curious as the block paved drive was bubbling beneath my feet. Once inside, all seemed in order until entering a ground floor reception room with a squelch beneath my feet… I asked again whether there had been any historical flooding issues…
3.Which famous person(dead or alive) would you invite to a dinner party and why?
Prince Harry… I have been in his distant company at a party and he looked good fun.
4. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Dubai, it is so closely aligned with my character; organised but fun and it is a fascinating place once you’ve scratched the surface. The weather isn’t bad either.
5. What’s one talent or skill you’ve always wanted to learn?
Golf, I ‘play’ badly, but would very like more time to master an amazingly skilful sport.
6. What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
It wasn’t adventurous, but I was very proud to complete the London Marathon on behalf of the Air Ambulance.
7. What’s something you hope to accomplish on your bucket list someday?
Monaco Grand Prix, from a yacht
8. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
When preparing to qualify as a Chartered Surveyor and revising for my APC, a colleague told me to clear my social diary for six months beforehand and solely focus on revision. At the time it was difficult to be that disciplined, but I did it, which was the best professional advice I’ve had. Six months sacrifice has since presented me with any number of future opportunities.
